Notes on Maugham's Of Human Bondage Of Human Bondage was the best-selling title in the regular Modern Library series from the early 1930s at least through the early 1950s. It sold 80,000 copies between 1930 and the end of 1938. In the early 1940s it was selling 12,000 copies a year, just ahead of Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. It sold 11,563 copies in 1952. New plates were created for this title in 1946. The new plates resulted in a decrease in the page count from 766 to 760 even though there was no real change to the content. For a list of other titles where new plates resulted in a change to the page count while the content remained the same, see Book Block Plate Varieties.
