Notes on Frenssen's Jörn Uhl According to ML bibliographer Barry Neavill, the first printing of this title does NOT have the monk device on the title page. Facing the title page is a nine line note with the first line being "The publishers will be glad to mail a". First lines missing that indefinite article or notes that are 11 lines long belong to later printings. Barry says "Copies with the monk device on the title page are later, but there were at least two and probably three printings before the monk device (3,000 copies in 1921, 2,000 copies in 1922, 1,000 copies in 1923), plus 2,000 copies in 1924. I've seen copies with the 'BL' device on the title page with two different publisher's notes facing the title page: a 9-line note (first line: 'The Publishers will be glad to mail a') and an 11-line note (first line: 'The publishers will be glad to'). I believe the 9-line note is earlier. There's also a different 9-line note (first line: 'The Publishers will be glad to mail') that I think comes chronologically between the other two, but I haven't seen it on Jorn Uhl." Misspelled Name on Spine: Hawk-eyed collector Chad Bernu points out that Frenssen is misspelled as Frennsen at the top of the book spine in the first edition. Other reports indicate that the misspelling may have persisted throughout the entire life of the book.
