For decades John Dewey has been a pioneer in American education and philosophy. His writings have had enormous influence and have brought him recognition throughout the world as the foremost champion of the doctrines of democracy. Not only have his interpretations a firm socio-economic basis, but they extend to include the whole range of human experience.  To offer a comprehensive body of John Dewey's work has long been the aim of the editors of the Modern Library, and the fulfillment of that purpose is possible only because the Giant format provides the ideal setting for such an undertaking. This volume is representative of the whole range of his published work and contains, in addition, an important contribution specially written for the Modern Library and material selected from a new book soon to be published. The editorial work was done by Joseph Ratner, who also contributes a long and illuminating introduction.
