Notes on the illustrated Wisdom of Confucius:

The Wisdom of Confucius was the best-selling title in the Illustrated Modern Library series.

The first printing was on a thicker paper than subsequent ones, and the imprint on the title page is "The Modern Library." The imprint on the title page of the three subsequent printings is "The Illustrated Modern Library."

The first two printings came in slipcases, and the third and fourth (the last) printings had acetate jackets. The third printing had a silkscreened front panel; the fourth had a front panel label printed on paper and pasted to the jacket.

Don't Be Deceived: The earliest printing had just one copyright date, 1943. Later printings show two copyright dates, 1938 and 1943.

First printings of Brothers Karamazov, Wisdom of Confucius, Pickwick Papers, and History of Tom Jones have the imprint "Modern Library" on the spine of the binding; all later printings have the imprint "Illustrated Modern Library."
