Butterfield 8 first appeared in the regular Modern Library series in the fall of 1962. (It was a Modern Library paperback in 1957.) But in a number of bibliographic sources, it shows up as first appearing in the Modern Library series in 1952. These sources are wrong, probably the result of someone entering information incorrectly and then having that information quoted by others.

Butterfield 8 has a Modern Library number of 323, a number not assigned to any issue until 1962. The title appears in no Modern Library catalog or list of active titles previous to fall of 1962.
