Gautier's Mademoiselle de Maupin (1918) was bowdlerized. The Modern Library used the 1887 Vizetelly translation. In that translation, following the sentence in Chapter 16 "He took up the fair one in his arms and bore her to the couch," there appear three lines of asterisks each line of which represents an omitted paragraph.

Modern Library printings included the three lines of asterisks in place of the censored text until 1935, when One of Cleopatra's Nights was added to the Modern Library edition. By then, the recent Ulysses decision had opened the door to more explicit descriptions of sex in literary works, and Cerf and Klopfer commissioned a translation of the omitted paragraphs. The new content appears on pp. 289-290 of Mademoiselle de Maupin & One of Cleopatra's Nights.

The first printing of 053.2 contains a booklist from Spring 1935.
