| Thread Name: 90.3 (Four Cont. French Plays) 1st Indicator (was Guide Question - First and Later Editions)
From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 7:53:17 -0500 In this case, we need to add an indicator to the guide for 90.3. For some time, I have been wondering if either the FMLEd indicator was incorrect or there was at least a second printing for this title. I have a copy, but it does not state First Edition. The binding/dj is 13/n. The book list inside is for Fall 1967. dbapaper (Amy, correct?) recently listed a copy on eBay (8310411355) and indicates "First Modern Library Edition, September 1967". So there was more than one printing. Ed at Barnaby Rudge claims to have a copy that indicates a 1968 printing. Ed, can you confirm that? ABE has 16 of these available with dj; 3 claim first edition stated. I propose adding an "F" under the H_C column. Henry, does this sound appropriate? ------------------------------------- From: GORDON NEAVILL <aa3401@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 11:23:09 -0400 The first printing of Four Contemporary French Plays states "FIRST MODERN LIBRARY EDITION, September, 1967" but has a spring 1967 list at the end of the volume (includes Faulkner, As I Lay Dying but not Faulkner, Pylon). I've seen a later printing without the first statement but didn't note the date of the list at the end. This was originally scheduled for spring 1967 -- perhaps the reason for the spring list. I don't know why it was postponed. Oddly, it wasn't listed in Publishers Weekly "Weekly Record" of new books until May 13, 1968 ... maybe RH forgot to send it in when it first appeared. A fall 1967 list includes Faukner Pylon but not Forster, Collected Tales; a spring 1968 list includes Forster, Collected Tales but not Burgess, Clockwork Orange & Honey for the Bears. ------------------------------------- From: dbapaper@removed> ((Amy Comeau) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 11:24:51 -0400 (EDT) In response to Ron's query, I can confirm that the copy of Four Contemporary French Plays that I have up for sale on ebay does state "First Modern Library Edition, September 1967" on the Copyright Page. I'm not sure about the source of Ron's confusion, however. My copy of The Guide on page 56 notes "FMLEd" under the the column headed "ID__1ST" and correctly indicates the 1967 date for the first issue. ------------------------------------- From: HTatML@removed> ((Henry Toledano) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 11:47:59 EDT I think Amy has answered your question. ------------------------------------- From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 10:56:17 -0500 The confusion was the lack of an entry under "H_C" in the guide, which to me meant that there was no printing other than the first. When I picked one up, it did not have the "first" statement; so i did not know if this title had an unmarked first (and the FMLEd was incorrect) or if there were later printings and the code was missing under "H_C" in the guide. Your listing helped solve that. The code was missing; and I am proposing we add one. So with the different book lists, this title was not printed with offset lithography, correct? ------------------------------------- From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 10:59:13 -0500 Well.... my question really was does everyone agree with adding an "F" under the H_C column for 90.3; everything else was historical information which lead me to this proposition. ------------------------------------- From: Scot Kamins <kamins@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 09:31:20 -0700 So there was indeed a later printing. Given the commonality of the title and the fact that the first has a value of G, it would seem fair to list a value of F for a later edition. This, of course, brings up that old issue of later editions sometimes being scarcer than firsts, but because of market demands the more common instance brings more money. Weird, that. ------------------------------------- From: Scot Kamins <kamins@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 09:37:26 -0700 I think Ron is correct. His suggestion is that there's a later printing not accounted for, and that a value be added to the Guide. I assume he was quoting Amy's auction to point out an instance of a first edition, as opposed to his discovery of a later printing. ------------------------------------- From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 12:07:10 -0500 Yes, Amy was the credible eyewitness to convince me the statement existed. But, after days and days of difficult and painstaking research, it turns out that Barry knew all along. ------------------------------------- From: "Ed Postal" <book@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 10:12:39 -0700 I listed it as a 1968 printing only because it did not state FMLE. In checking further it does not list Rector Of Justin, Quiet American, Repreive, but list all the other 1967 books and is a 13/o binding/dj. ------------------------------------- From: J B Krygier <jbkrygier@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 14:25:18 -0400 I have a copy of this non-FMLE edition. The catalog is correct for the first, though. I guess RH took off the FMLE statement, but did not change the catalog. My copy has blank endpapers, and the coarse, low-grade paper (now yellow and brittle) common to post 1970 printings. Unfortunately, it is price-clipped, so can't know for sure (unless someone knows if that crappy paper was used pre-1970). ------------------------------------- From: "John Wolansky" <jwol@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 15:21:27 -0400 I have a stated first and a later printing. Both copies have a spring 1967 list at the end of the book. Both books are 13 with an n jacket. One other observed difference, unless I am colorblind (and I am, a bit) is the first is in a blue cover with gold printing on the spine, while the other is in a much darker blue with silver printing on the spine. Both copies have $2.45 initial prices on the dj and both books have Fajita eps. Although the non first is ever so slightly thicker, the pages remain white. So, we have subsequent printings with both Spring and Fall 1967 lists. ------------------------------------- From: GORDON NEAVILL <aa3401@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 16:46:24 -0400 Thanks for the information, John ... the copy I've seen without the first statement had the same "ml" endpapers as the first printing. ------------------------------------- From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 14:38:43 -0500 Thanks to everyone for weighing in on this. My copy is at home and it may also indicate spring 1967 (rather than fall like I said earlier); I had written it into memory last night but by this morning some of the data may have become corrupt. I will check tonight, and also look at the color of the printing, so hold off on that spring to fall list change! ------------------------------------- From: Scot Kamins <kamins@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 12:47:57 -0700 Do the DJ front panels for the first printing and later printing display different color characteristics? ------------------------------------- From: "John Wolansky" <jwol@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 16:59:31 -0400 Both copies have the same color configuration. I perceive a very very slight shade difference in the colors and the first seems is clearly a brighter white. The reprint is not one of those ugly bindings that at a a glance can be confused with a buckram cover. Off to Happy Hour! ------------------------------------- From: <modlib@removed> ((Ron Holl) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 17:39:08 -0500 My copy is 13/n, Hunter Green boards, silver print on spine with the thick, block torchbearer, and blank end papers. The price on the DJ is 2.95. And..... a SPRING 1967 list. ------------------------------------- From: HTatML@removed> ((Henry Toledano) Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 20:15:22 EDT Yes, an "F" under the H_C column would be appropriate. ------------------------------------- From: Scot Kamins <kamins@removed> Date: Fri, 10 Jun 2005 17:56:51 -0700 Great! Done at dogeared. For other updates (with a few more to come for several titles listed as starting in 1965 but that show in the 1964 catalog, courtesy of Ron Holl) ) see http://www.dogeared.com/ General/changeLog.html ------------------------------------- |
