Author Intros Written Especially
for Modern Library Editions

Over the years, a number of authors wrote special introductions or prefaces to go with the new Modern Library editions of their work. These introductions are especially important to completest collectors of individual authors as well as to ML collectors.

Sometimes the intros were just a page or two contributing little to the work, while other times the intros went on for quite a space and made a significant contribution to the edition. My favorite is the brief but illuminating introduction that Hammett wrote for the Maltese Falcon, in which he explains the source of the characters.

Toledano's guide notes many of these unique introductions, marking them as "A -ML" in the Comments column. He misses about a dozen of them. (He also misidentifies the intro to Wodehouse, but this is clearly a typo.)

The following charts list the ML editions 1917-1970 with special intros, forewords, prefaces, and/or epilogues. If you know of any that I've missed, please e-mail me.
