This
index to authors of introductions to Modern Library books is from my
forthcoming bibliography, The Canon in the Marketplace: A Descriptive
Bibliography of the Modern Library Series, 1917-1990. It includes introductions to volumes in the regular
Modern Library and Modern Library Giants. The author of the introduction is
followed by the author, title, publication date, and bibliography number of the
book being introduced. Authors who wrote introductions to their own books are
followed directly by the title; see, for example, Sherwood Anderson’s
introduction to the Modern Library edition of his novel Poor White. Introductions commissioned by the Modern Library and originally published in Modern Library books [including those that may have been commissioned for and first appeared in Modern Library college editions - Ed.] are identified by an asterisk. The lack of an asterisk indicates that the introduction was reprinted from a previous edition of the book or first appeared in a periodical. Introductions by editors of Modern Library anthologies are not included.
Numbering system: Like other scholarly descriptive bibliographies, entries in my
bibliography of the Modern Library series are arranged chronologically by
publication date. Bibliography numbers for regular Modern Library books begin
with 1, Oscar Wilde’s Picture of Dorian Gray (1917), and continue through 642, Mark Twain, The
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
(1985). Bibliography numbers are extended to indicate successive typesettings
and families of printings. The three typesettings of Flaubert’s Madame
Bovary, the twenty-fifth title
published in the Modern Library, are numbered 25.1, 25.2, and 25.3. Families of
printings within typesettings are based on reset title pages, introductions
added and dropped, and other significant differences (excluding variant dust
jackets). The Steegmuller translation of Madame Bovary (25.3) exists in four families of printings. The
initial printings were unillustrated. After the first two or so printings, four
line drawings created for the Book-of-the-Month Club were added to the plates.
The last two families of printings are based on reset or partially reset title
pages in 1969/70 and 1978. The families of printings of the Steegmuller
translation are numbered 25.3a through 25.3d. The numbering system and
arrangement of the bibliography reflect the historical purpose of bibliographical
scholarship and differ from the system based on Modern Library catalog numbers
used in Henry Toledano’s Modern Library Price Guide and www.ModernLib.com.
