What's This 91.3 Doing In The Middle Of The 91.4 Period?

[This mystery has been solved. The dates in both the Toledano Guide were wrong, "1950" should have been "1960." See the BookNotes for each title, now corrected, for the details.]

So here we have what at first glance looks like an Emerson 91.3, Complete Essays and Other Writings with the McDowell foreword. This version was purported to be in existence for one season in 1950. We have the proper title page, the proper DJ front panel, the proper 1950 copyright, and the proper foreword. (Allegedly in the Fall of that year the title was changed to Selected Writings and stayed in the catalog for quite awhile.)

But look at the title count from the DJ inverse -- 388 titles -- and the last title from the back-of-book Giants catalog -- G82, The Faulkner Reader. They date this book and matching dust jacket to 1959, well into the 91.4 Selected Writings period (1950 - 1975).

So what's up with this?

Thanks to Vincent Civiletti for discovering this and for sending me all the supporting material.
